A Birthday Letter

I’d always like to believe that birthdays are precious reminders of how wonderful life is. It’s also the opportune moment to remember that there are people who are willing to join you in your journey, who will remind you of your dreams and who will send you gifts in different forms but for only one reason: To tell you that you’re loved.

I just had my birthday two days ago. I thought it ended there but it didn’t.

This evening when I got home, a package was waiting to be opened. Little did I know that it holds one of the gifts I will treasure forever. Along with three meticulously-picked books is a letter which talked about dreams and happiness. It’s too well written not to be shared and gifts such as this is meant to encourage people to always, always, choose happiness.

Dear Raine,

I know that you have been chasing dreams after dreams, and, in between, trying to understand who you are and what you will do with your life. Put together, that is one hell of a long journey, so I wish you happiness.

But I do not wish you the kind of happiness that begins with expectations or affirmation from yourself or others, or one that follows with “if” or “but”. I do not wish you happiness that you are required to explain because it seems too complicated, or one that you are going to be sorry about because you feel afraid or undeserving of it.

Rather, I wish you the kind of happiness that you can freely and fearlessly feel, own and share, and nobody will take it from you or tell you that it is unreal. I wish you happiness that defines your self, your relationships with others, and the choices you make in your journey. I wish you happiness as you reach for your little and big dreams and enjoy their perks and rewards, but more than these, I wish you greater happiness that you can find beyond the superficial, the temporary and the tangible. I wish you lifelong friendships and love.

If at time, you wake up with sadness, or it knocks at your door, or it rains on you, and it is hard to feel it, do not doubt for a second the moments that you were happy and the reassurance that you will be happy, anyway.

CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY!
